USC's Annenberg School for Communication Receives $2.5 Million From Johnson Publishing Company

The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California has announced a $2.5 million grant from Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., the world's largest African-American-owned and -operated publishing company, to establish the Johnson Communication Leadership Center.

Established by JPC president and CEO Linda Johnson Rice, the new center will feature a new undergraduate scholarship program — the first at the school to focus on the specific interests of the African-American community. Recipients of Johnson Scholarships will be selected for the program based on academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, and a strong interest and involvement in issues related to African Americans in the world of journalism and communications.

In addition to funding scholarships, the center will provide numerous other experiences specifically designed for Johnson Scholars, including exclusive seminars that expose students to leaders who influence the fields of journalism and communication; mentorships with an experienced journalism or communication professional; travel to major destinations within and eventually outside the United States; research projects with members of the USC Annenberg faculty on a topic of importance to the field; scholarly activities designed to advance knowledge of the role of African Americans in the media; and internships, including the opportunity to work for leading media entities.

"Johnson Publishing Company is excited to fund this new initiative at USC," said Rice, a USC trustee, member of the USC Annenberg board of councilors, and alumna of the school. "The scholarships as well as the extensive exposure to mentorship, research, and travel are innovative ways to support the African-American perspective in the journalism and communication fields."

“USC Annenberg Establishes Johnson Center to Support Undergraduates and Research on African-American Issues in the Media.” Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California Press Release 8/23/07.
