It's called bloodlust, and soldiers are quite naturally the right people to have that type of personality characteristic. In war there are two factions at all times, US vs THEM. Every military person, and his/her family/supporters realizes that. Although the people may be innocent, in terms of survival of the fittest, if someone has to go, its going to be you and not me. That's the mentality that is pervasive among soldiers.
We can pontificate all we want about the morality involved in this war, but it's apparently too late for that. We've got a task, and we've got to finish it. Any child can pick up a bible story book and see plenty of instances of bloodshed, and inhumane violence; yet you wouldn't shield your child from that would you?
A more realistic way to train our children is how my mother taught me; "We do not condone fighting, but if you must, you will defend yourself. And you will not let anyone back you down from what is right. And if you come home crying beaten up, we're going to whip you and send you back out there."
You cannot protect our children from everything (didn't you see Finding Nemo?). . .all we can do as parents/role models is help them make good decisions.
