WIMBUSH SELECTED TO PLAY IN HULA BOWL

Fort Valley State University running back Derrick Wimbush has been selected to play in the 59 th Hula Bowl All-Star Game in Maui , Hawaii . The game will be played on January 22, 2005 in War Memorial Stadium.

Wimbush, a native of Mauk, Ga., rushed for 1,840 yards and 22 touchdowns, both school records, during the 2004 football season. He also set the mark for most 200 yard games (4) during a season. Derrick finished the regular season leading the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in rushing, scoring and all purpose yardage. On a national level, Wimbush finished 3 rd in Division II in rushing, tied for 6 th in scoring and was 7 th in the country in all purpose yards. He (Wimbush) was named as the SIAC’s “Offensive Player of the Week” five times and earned honorable mention status from D2football.com and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. He was recently named to SIAC’s All-Conference team as a first unit selection, and earned “Offensive Player of the Year” and “Player of the Year” from the league as well. He is a candidate for several All-American teams and is a national finalist for the Harlon Hill Award, given to the best player in Division II.

Derrick completed his career at Fort Valley State rushing for 3,188 yards and 36 touchdowns, averaging 144.9 yards a game. He also caught 20 passes for 145 yards and another score. Dating back to the 2003 season, Wimbush rushed for over 100 yards in 13 consecutive games. Wimbush is the first Fort Valley State football player to be invited to the Hula Bowl. “It’s definitely an honor for me to be associated with the first Fort Valley State Wildcat to be selected to the Hula Bowl,” stated head John Morgan. “It’s good to see the tradition of Wildcats being selected to play in high profile all-star games being continued by Derrick.”

The game will be broadcast live on ESPN and worldwide on the Westwood One/CBS radio network.

This past season, the Wildcats were 7-4 (4-4 SIAC).

*Yeah, make sure he isn't the only one from an HBCU cause people get real upset if you don't mention their school too.
