Nia Long
Nitara Carlynn "Nia" Long was born October 30, 1970 in Brooklyn, New York to Talita, a teacher and printmaker, and Doughtry "Doc" Long, a high school teacher and poet. She is of Afro-Trinidadian and African American heritage. Her stage name, Nia, means "Purpose" in Swahili. Nia attended the Roman Catholic school St. Mary's Academy and studied ballet, tap, jazz, gymnastics, guitar and acting. She graduated from Westchester High School in 1989. Her first notable role was as Kathryn "Kat" Speakes on the soap opera Guiding Light from 1991 to 1994. From there she continued acting with TV roles on
"Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", "Third Watch" and
"Boston Legal". Some of her film roles include
"Boyz N The Hood", "Friday" and the
"Big Momma's House" and
"Are We There Yet?" film series. In 2000, she was voted one of
Black Men's Magazine "10 Sexiest Women of the Year" and one of
People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World". When she isn't in front of the camera, she can be seen behind it directing music videos. She is the half-sister to Queens of Comedy comedienne, Sommore.
