Re: from prep school to hbcu
I completely understand where you're coming from. I've attended an all white exclusive private school for 13 YEARS! There's only 4 black people in my ENTIRE class. I got accepted to Spelman in December. I really want to attend because it would be a totally different experience for me. My sister went to Spelman and she said that she had a reverse culture shock. Going from an all white school to a black school is going to be different, but I'm sure that it will be a positive experience.

I would highly recommend attending an HBCU. It is an experience of a lifetime. As far as fitting in, I would not worry about it. From my experience, several students that attend HBCUs are from non-black high schools. From what I have heard, Spelman students are exceptional and very articulate. Therefore, you should integrate well with the student body. Trust me, when you get to Spelman, I am confident they will take care of you. As far as the “Step Up” mentality at your school, I think most black guys prefer a black female. Most of my friends are successful black men and their desire is to marry a black female. Therefore, I am sure you will definitely find a young man that interests you. If you want to meet some positive black teens, you should consider joining INROADS, Junior Achievement, or Black Achievers. Below are the links for those organizations. Good Luck!

I'd figure you get teased regardless of whether it was PWI or HBCU. I go to a PWI right now and still get teased for 'acting white'...what is this?! And I wish a white student would come up to me claiming I was self-segregating. I barely hang out with African-American students as it is simply because most of them don't like me. They feel that I'm a sell-out and that I try too hard to be something I'm not. Black. Just ignore the ignorance and do what you gotta do. If Spelman is where you wanna go, then go. ANY college environment would require you to create your own social niche, so don't be scared. That's just life. Oh, and don't be afraid to be different. It's what makes you, well, you.

When my friend KIKI went to a HBCU from Connecticut she got made fun of right away for talkin white...it aint fault we dont have distinct accents like others from down south lol...But its straight, im sure people will say the same thing when I go to Howard next year lololol
