Hello, I am a long time reader of the forums but, this is my first time posting. I have a few questions/concerns regarding Morehouse College.
However, a little about myself I am currently a sixteen year old junior in high school. I have 6 classes, 2 APs: Psychology and Biology. I do not play any sports although I should. However, I do go to the gym 3 times a week. I have a medical condition called SVT or Supraventricular Tachycardia which is rapid rhythm of the heart which is troublesome but, not life threatening. I also have a twin sister whom annoys me at times but, I love dearly . I have intentions of becoming a Doctor (Heart Surgeon specifically) or a FBI agent. If I were accepted into Morehouse I would pursue a major in Biology and a minor Criminal Justice.
Questions:
What SAT and/or ACT scores are needed for the full-ride scholarship?
What scores are needed on the SAT and/or ACT to be placed in ENG 103 and
MTH 106 (Calculus)?
Of the HBCU (besides Xavier) is Morehouse a good school for students with intentions of becoming a Doctor? Does the science curriculum prepare students well for the MCATS (minus the students efforts put into it)? What programs, interships, volunteering, and jobs etc. are offered for pre-med students?
How tough is the Biology major and Criminal Justice minor at Morehouse College? Also, are classes everyday or on certain days?
If I took pre-calculus in high school and pass. Do I get to continue with Calculus in freshmen or sophomore year of college? If, I earned college credit from a Community college is it transferable to Morehouse?
Are students are allowed to plan their schedule or is it pre determined by counselor?
Is the administration fair and reasonable? I heard most HBCUs had shady administration I hope thats not true for Morehouse.
Is there a fitness gym located on the campus? If so, how often is the gym open?
How is the weather? Last time I went to Atlanta it was humid. Generally I am not use to humid weather since I live in the bay area (cali).
Is the cafeteria food good? How expensive is it?
How are the dorms (and halls)?
How is the overall morale at Morehouse?
Is there a police department located nearby? Starting freshmen (or sophomore) year I'm hoping I can get a job in the police department to get work experience.
Are groceries stores, Targets and hospitals etc. close?
How expensive is transportation (Buses)? How far is the airport from school?
Sorry for the all the questions, I tried emailing a few counselors but, haven't gotten a response. <- Last year by the way
FYI -
Xavier University Stays On Top
(94 Graduates Go to Medical School)
Xaxier University, a Historically Black College in Louisiana, continues to make history. For the ninth consecutive year, Xavier has sent more black students to medical school than any college or university in the US. In 2001, 94 Xavier's graduates, headed to medical schools. This total is nearly triple the total of number sent by second place Spelman College (38), another
heralded HBCU. Harvard University was third (37), according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges. The top ten schools, in getting black students into medical school for the year 2001, follows:
*Xavier---94 students to medical schools
*Spelman College---38
Harvard---37
*Howard---33
*Morehouse---33
U. of Maryland---24
Johns Hopkins---20
U. of California in Los Angeles---17
U. of North Carolina at Chapell Hill---16
U. of Virginia---16

Biology is tough at Morehouse, Most of your classes will be MWF or Tues and Thurs..Major classes are usually MW and other classes are 1days.
If I took pre-calculus in high school and pass. Do I get to continue with Calculus in freshmen or sophomore year of college? If, I earned college credit from a Community college is it transferable to Morehouse?
Yeah you can continue with Calculus in your freshman year and you would have to make sure Morehouse accepts outside credits for that class(THEY ARE VERY STRICT, SO PLEASE CHECK)
Are students are allowed to plan their schedule or is it pre determined by counselor?
Is the administration fair and reasonable? I heard most HBCUs had shady administration I hope thats not true for Morehouse.
You have to be responsible and keep up with your information. Morehouse will not carry you along the way.
Is there a fitness gym located on the campus? If so, how often is the gym open?
Yeah, we have a weight room. Its open everyday till like 11pm.
How is the weather? Last time I went to Atlanta it was humid. Generally I am not use to humid weather since I live in the bay area (cali).
ATL weather is weird, its usually HOT in the "hot" months and COLD in the "cold" months. Sometimes it does get hot out of no where though in like november.
Is the cafeteria food good? How expensive is it?
Its cool. Its not like public college where you have fast food restaurants though. At dinner there are different lines to choose from depending on what you want to eat. They usually have a Pasta line,Sandwich line, Burger and Fries lines, Pizza line, and Main dish line. Oh and the salad bar is always open. Every freshman has to have the full meal plan of 19 meals a week.
How are the dorms (and halls)?
....take a tour.
How is the overall morale at Morehouse?
Very high.
Is there a police department located nearby? Starting freshmen (or sophomore) year I'm hoping I can get a job in the police department to get work experience.
Yes.
Are groceries stores, Targets and hospitals etc. close?
Yes, Publix is down the street, Grady Hospital is right around the corner, Target is accessible with Marta(still isnt that far though)
How expensive is transportation (Buses)? How far is the airport from school?
Airport is about 10-15 min from the school. Most people take MARTA which is the train or bus..1 trip is like $1 and some change.
