TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida A&M fired longtime football coach Billy Joe and two assistants Tuesday, citing NCAA rules violations in recruiting and eligibility.
The university will now try to find a replacement for Joe with about eight weeks before players report for preseason practice. Also fired were assistant head coach/offensive coach Gregory Black and running backs coach Mario Allen.
The football program has had a series of problems recently, beginning when it made an attempt to jump from Division I-AA to Division I-A. The move was aborted and the school finished 3-8 last year playing as a I-AA independent. It will return to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season
Also last year, FAMU was stripped of MEAC championships from 2000 and 2001 after an investigation should 196 NCAA rules violations throughout its athletics program.
Joe's career record stands at 237-108-4 over 31 seasons, including a 86-46 record in 11 seasons at FAMU.
