Default I have been accepted but don't have the money to go to Spelman so...

As a prospective Spelmanite, I want to know how to go about applying for membership into Americorps,Bonner Scholars, Work Study, and any other on campus jobs.

Congrats on your acceptance to Spelman! To sign up for work study, contact the Financial Aid office at Spelman. They should be able to provide you with work study information. Since it’s still early, you should be in a good position to obtain work study. Another way to get money for school is to participate in a research, summer, or enrichment program. Also, you may want to consider being a teacher or research assistant. Based upon your major, I would ask the department head about research opportunities and programs. Most of those programs receive grant money and will pay for your tuition. In addition, it looks good on your resume. Check out the link below for details. Good Luck!

Congratulations on getting accepted!

I'm assuming you've already completed the FAFSA and applied for Pell Grant / Stafford Loans. If not, go to FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid and do so ASAP. The deadline to apply for fall semester student aid is June.

1. Work study could be an option - but in order to be eligible, you must have completed the FAFSA as this is federally subsidized work study.

2. Other on-campus jobs, assistant positions, or internships are a possibility, but may be hard to come by as a freshman.

3. Apply for as many scholarships as you possibly can. If you haven't already done so, sign up for scholarship notices at www.fastweb.com. Also check the scholarship forum here at HBCUConnect. See if your high school, church, parent's employers, and any organizations you're a part of offer scholarships or tuition credits. You might be surprised at what you find.

4. Ask family for help. Seriously. A few hundred $ for books, or a helpful tip from a relative that leads to a scholarship can make a big difference.

5. Contact the department chair or dean for your major, and see if there are any departmental scholarships or internships.

6. Consider part-time employment off-campus to help with living expenses.

These are the big ones... good luck!

Hopefully we will find the money or find ways to pay back the loans.
