The Good HBCU's
I was talking to a friend of mine, who was telling me about a job interview she had....the Employer asked her what school she went to and she said "Howard".....The employer's reply was "Oh you went to one of the "good" black schools. (employer obviously being MD' or melanin deficient).
Our discussion then went on to another comment that she heard from one of her white friends from high school. the girl informed her of how whites viewed black schools as the "A-E-I-O-U" of black schools:
 Howard
 Hampton
 Spelman
 Morehouse,
 and SOMETIMES FAMU
While I love Howard and its everything, i still have respect for other HBCU's and their contribution to Blacks and America, I was taken aback by this convo. And this served as a constant reminder of the reputation of HBCUs....What's everyone else's view on White's and HBCU's? Most of us will be graduating in the next year or so and your Alma Mata on your resume is gonna mean more than you think.

Finally put a pic up!! You'll get a new one layta!
i personally don't care how Whites view HBCUs b/c I know I have a few words, myself, for PWIs...
i know that engineering, nursing, & computer-related majors are probably more likely to receive a better response upon telling future employers that they graduated from A&T than my being a Journalism major/Spanish minor will when the employers find out I am of A&T...
but really...I guess it just depends on each employer...& each individual employee....there have been some great faces to come out of all types of HBCUs - A&T included - so you just gotta work what you have & do what you need to get where u want in life...if u wanna get there bad enough...
like I said...I really don't care what White people or what ANYone PERiod thinks of any individual HBCU or even of the concept of HBCUs as a whole...because none of that will stop me from getting to whatever I want bad enough out of life...and ya'll know I'm gonna love & be proud of Black institutions & especially A&T regardless...
I think that although many Whites are not as familiar with HBCU's, those who have visited one or come into contact with graduates are almost always impressed. Considering that the academic and social environment at HBCU's are almost always very different than PWI's.
While many PWI's focus on providing a comfortable student atmosphere, most HBCU's are focused strictly on academics. That is why there is generally a more disciplined and serious atmosphere at HBCU campuses as opposed to elsewhere, where the student body is more concerned with tapping the keg than going to class. We can hold it down at the club, but the classroom always comes first.
I don't think that the colleague that you were speaking with was trying to be demeaning toward HBCU's, but rather recognizing that you are an alumni of one of the more well-known schools. Similar to comparing Michigan or MIT against, lets say Towson. If I told an employer I had a degree in computer science from MIT, they would probably make a similar comment, not saying that Towson is an inferior school.
Unfortunately, most people don't always get an inside look at HBCU's, and those that do usually are best informed about the Big Five (Howard, Hampton, Morehouse, Spelman, and FAMU or Clark). There are equally great things going on at Virginia Union, Norfolk State, Savannah State, and lots of other schools that don't get the same kinds of publicity or attention.
We have to continue to represent our institutions well and command respect. Holla!
