Do you think HBCU's are to loose with there admissions?

I go to Va State. and i was comparing the admissions requirements to get in my school and Norfolk State and there was a big diffrence there SAT and ACT were lowered and also the GPA was lowered. Know I don't knew about anybody eles but i worked hard to get into college. I think some are taking going to a black college for granted. I think people for go that people died before us so we could go to college and so there could be HBCU not for that to admit those who just want to party and do nothing, but for those who want to better themseleves and bring our race up higher than before. Now i know some will say it's a black college and all black's should be admited. No, why would you want some one at your university bring down your university by not caring when you can eliminate that by just not admiting them, because no matter what any one says everybody isn't meant to go to college and college should not be forced on anyone who does not want it. I am proud that I go to an HBCU and that i get a chance to make though who came before me smile becuase im tying to better myself and my university.

Well, my opinion is that HBCU's are loose with there admission. I think there reason for that is they want to give most any black student the opportunity to go to college. If that person gets to school and just wants to party and not do anything, that's unfortunate, but the school got there money. The school is going to promote their students who are doing good and those students are going to have benefits over regular students for example getting internships and things. However, ultimately the school will admit most students, as long as they pay tuition.

Well I definately know that my school is not loose when it comes to admission. Out of the almost 3000 applications per year only about 600 people are accepted. My school is highly selective, and very hard to get into. I also know that you will find people everywhere who don't want to do anything but party and act a fool....I mean it's just life.

Some black colleges have lower admission requirements than white schools because a large percentage of black students entering college come from high schools that were not equipped with the same materials as majority white high schools. Justice Breyer said, during the affirmative action case, that 75% of black students below college age, go to schools that are more than 50% black, and of those schools, 85% are underfunded and are in poverished areas. If all black colleges placed the same requirements on admissions as white colleges, then they will still be denying those black students who were dealt a bad hand in high school. I would also like to add that out of the three majority white schools and one hbcu I applied to, only one other school had higher admission requirements than the hbcu.

No...for the most part, they are not too loose. Those who come to school to party will either straighten up or fall by the wayside very quickly, so I wouldn't worry about that.

It's like another person said....most HBCUs want to give as many African Americans as possible the opportunity to be successful. Just because you didn't have great SAT scores, that does not mean you can't be successful. It may just mean that you're not a good test taker. Historically...African Americans as a group usually score lower on standardized tests. Just because your HS GPA wasn't a 3.0 or above, it doesn't mean that you can't be successful. It may just mean that you are a late bloomer or had other issues going on.

Some schools use SATs and GPAs as a way to keep people out of their schools. HBCUs tend to look more at the person as a whole and the potential the person has. Without these schools, many African Americans would not have the opportunity to receive a post-secondary education.

Certain HBCU's are there for certain types of students. That's all there is to it.
All HBCU's have produced at least one influencial African American. I do believe that some standards are low to help students to be admitted to the university but if the student has a drive to attend college with low grades then more power to them.

Good Topic!

I think that it is like any other school. Just because a school
is an HBCU does not mean they all attract the same students
and the same standards. Each HBCU is different.
