Default Guide to Freshman Year

I thought I would provide an informal guide on your "Crab" year at Tuskegee.

- As you guys have already experienced, Skegee can be quite slow and unorganized with everything they do. Don't get discouraged. You have to remember that you are the student and never take no for an answer. Always stay on them.

- If you don't have a full ride for your Freshman year, I would urge you to start applying for scholarships early for Sophomore year. The financial aid office has tons of applications for outside scholarships. Also, stay in front of your financial aid counselor. They can be complete butt heads, but it's their job to provide you with scholarship information.

- Get involved. There are so many organizations on campus to get involved with. The more involved you become, the better your "Tuskegee Experience" will be. You have the state clubs, academic organizations, NAACP, Little Theater, band, choir, intramural sports, etc.

- Go to chapel. Besides the required Freshman Convocations, go to some of the chapel services.

- If you have never been to a Tuskegee football game, get ready for some of best times of your "Tuskegee Experience". Remember to get to the games early if you want to sit under the shed. You will learn all of the chants for the games during orientation.

- HOMECOMING. That's all I need to say.

- No matter what you decide to major in, attend the Career Fair in the fall. It's usually held during the month of September. Make sure you dress appropriately and take a resume. If you need help with your resume or just general information about professional development, go to the Career Development and Placement Center. I know many Freshman who got internships after their first year.

- Get involved in the community of Tuskegee. This is extremely helpful if you have plans to join a greek-lettered organization. It also reflects Tuskegee's mission to produce students who can be of service to their communities. Many students volunteer at the local VA Hospital, schools and other organizations.

- Take Professor Fluker for World History. It will definitely be an experience. Some of you guys will be placed in his class due to the fact that Tuskegee makes the schedules for Freshmen for the fall semester. If you are not in his class during the fall, try to enroll in his class during the spring. His class fills up very fast.

- GREEK WEEKS

- PARTY. Don't party all the time, but do attend some of the parties. I'm sure you are going to hit up the Harrison's or Soul Inn sometime during your Freshman year. Greeks sometime throw parties at the Armory.

- Morehouse-Tuskegee Football Classic and Morehouse-Tuskegee Basketball game. The Classic is held in Columbus, GA. The basketball game at Tuskegee is the biggest game of the year. Morehouse/Spelman usually brings buses to the game. This is definitely a game that you don't want to miss.

- Study hard. Most of your classes are going to be demanding, but remember that your main reason for attending college is to get an education and make good grades. It's easier to keep a good GPA if you start off focused. Believe me, it's hard as hell to bring your GPA up if you start of bad.

I hope this helps. If I think of anything else, I will post later.
