National Nurses Week kicks off at UPMC Memorial
|
Posted By: Hija Chang on May 08, 2026 Inside the emergency department, nurses are often the first point of contact for patients arriving with a wide range of needs. “Every day I get to see different patients,” said Taylor Wagaman, an emergency room nurse. “Some people it’s life or death, some people it’s pain management, some people it’s the mental health aspect of it—you never know.” Wagaman, who has worked as a nurse for eight years, said that unpredictability is part of the job, with care teams working together to respond quickly to each situation. “They’re seeing a whole team of us, and we all come together to work efficiently to provide that care,” she said. In critical situations, that coordination becomes even more important. Wagaman explained that equipment like crash carts and cardiac monitors are used to respond quickly when patients arrive in cardiac arrest, allowing teams to assess heart rhythms and determine next steps in care. She said speed is key in those moments. “You want to deliver that efficient, quick care to keep them moving,” Wagaman said. For Wagaman, the motivation to keep showing up comes down to the impact the job can have. “At the end of the day for me, I like to know that I made an impact in somebody’s life,” she said. “I switched to nursing, and ever since, you just don’t look back—it’s delivering care and helping people in the worst times of their lives.” UPMC Memorial has additional events planned throughout the week, including activities and recognition efforts for staff across different areas of the hospital. https://www.fox43.com/article/news/communi...
