Spelman College Names AI Pioneer Dr. Ayanna Howard as 12th President

Spelman College has appointed Dr. Ayanna Howard, a nationally recognized roboticist, entrepreneur, and artificial intelligence pioneer, as its 12th president, marking a historic moment for the nation's premier historically Black college for women as it positions itself at the intersection of liberal arts education and technological innovation.

The announcement, made June 5 by the Spelman College Board of Trustees following a comprehensive national search, signals the institution's commitment to preparing the next generation of Black women leaders for an increasingly technology-driven future. Howard will officially assume the presidency on August 1.

Lovette Russell, chair of the Spelman College Board of Trustees, emphasized the significance of the appointment in positioning the college for its next chapter.

"Dr. Howard is the visionary leader Spelman needs at this pivotal moment in our history. Throughout this search process, we sought a leader who would honor Spelman's legacy while boldly advancing our future, and Dr. Howard embodies that vision."

Russell added that Howard demonstrates a deep understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing higher education today, while maintaining an unwavering commitment to preparing Black women to lead and drive transformative change across all sectors.

A Distinguished Career in Innovation and Leadership

Howard's career spans multiple sectors and represents a unique combination of academic excellence and entrepreneurial achievement.

• Faculty and administrative positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology
• Co-founding Zyrobotics, which develops educational and therapeutic technologies for children with special needs
• Co-founding Black in Robotics, an organization dedicated to increasing representation in the robotics profession
• Authoring more than 300 publications in her field
• Recognition on Forbes' "America's Top 50 Women in Tech" list

In accepting the appointment, Howard expressed her commitment to building on Spelman's distinguished legacy while ensuring students are equipped to navigate and shape a rapidly evolving world.
