Fisk University Alumnus Rep. Justin Jones Joins Campus Protest Against Proposed AI Data Center

A heated debate over institutional progress versus community impact has emerged at Fisk University in Nashville, as Tennessee State Representative and Fisk alumnus Justin Jones joined campus protesters opposing the HBCU's proposed AI data center.

The controversy centers on Fisk's planned Innovation Center, a 100,000-square-foot facility that would include a 70,000-square-foot technology center and a 30,000-square-foot academic space. The project is part of the university's ambitious "Quantum Leap" master plan, which Fisk describes as the most robust campus plan in its 160-year history.

Community Concerns Over Environmental Impact

Representative Jones, speaking to protesters on campus, drew parallels between the North Nashville project and similar data center proposals that have faced resistance in rural white counties over agricultural land concerns.

"If it's not good for a white community, it's not good for a black community. What they're doing is they are preying on North Nashville, a community that has already been exploited, extracted from, treated as second class. And what we're here to say is we will not let that happen without resistance."

Jones also revealed a personal connection to the controversy, stating he previously taught a course on environmental racism at Fisk. According to Jones, Fisk University President Dr. Clark asked whether the class would conflict with plans to build the data center.

The opposition comes amid broader scrutiny of data centers across Nashville, including a separate proposed facility near the Nashville Zoo that has also drawn significant community resistance.

Fisk Emphasizes Community Partnership

In response to the concerns, Fisk University issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to the North Nashville community and a "do no harm" philosophy. The university highlighted several key points about the project:

• The master plan has been developed over the past two years with input from students, faculty, alumni, board members and partners
• The facility is "intentionally designed with sustainability, mission and community at its core"
• The center aims to leverage digital advancements, expand technology access, and enhance local workforce and educational opportunities
• Operating without burdening neighbors was a "non-negotiable design requirement"

"Fisk's 160-year legacy in 37208 has always been defined by excellence, and our North Nashville neighbors have played a critical role in that history but also remain essential to our future. We would never cause harm here."
