Now Hiring: Band Director / Music Teacher at Dunbar High School (Fort Myers, FL)
Posted By: Will Moss on July 03, 2026

Calling all music educators and proud products of the HBCU band tradition — Dunbar High School in Fort Myers, Florida is searching for a Director of Bands (Band Director / Music Teacher) to lead and grow one of Southwest Florida’s most exciting music programs.

If you grew up in the culture of drumlines, the Fifth Quarter, and Sunday-best halftime shows, this is your chance to build that same magic from the ground up. Dunbar is looking for an energetic, visionary, and student-centered leader ready to build a championship-caliber marching band and a music department rooted in excellence, discipline, pride, and family.

Key Takeaway: Dunbar High School (School District of Lee County) is hiring a Director of Bands to lead the Dunbar Tiger Band — a rare ground-floor opportunity to build one of Florida’s premier high school band programs.

What You’ll Lead

  • Championship marching band — build and lead a competitive, show-stopping marching program.
  • Concert & ensemble excellence — develop outstanding concert bands and ensembles.
  • Culture of pride — create a program defined by excellence, discipline, pride, and family.
  • Recruiting & retention — attract and keep talented student musicians.
  • Pathways to the next level — prepare students for collegiate and professional opportunities.
  • Community engagement — connect families and the community through exceptional performances.
By the Numbers: Competitive salary in the $50,000–$75,000 range plus benefits through the School District of Lee County.

Why Dunbar High School

  • Supportive leadership — a school administration invested in your success.
  • Talented students — outstanding young musicians with tremendous potential.
  • Tradition & pride — strong community support and school spirit.
  • Modern programs — including International Baccalaureate (IB) and STEM pathways.
  • Build something lasting — the opportunity to shape a premier Florida band program from the start.
Why It Matters: HBCU marching bands are the heartbeat of Black music culture, and it starts in high school band rooms. An HBCU-trained director at Dunbar can build a direct pipeline of young musicians into HBCU programs and beyond — carrying the tradition forward.
